Sundial Shell

Architectonica gualtierii

American Sundial

This image is a testament to the power of the Internet. I had orignally called this specimen Architectonica nobilis as that was the picture in my books that it most looks like, but I received e-mail from Dr. Rüdiger Bieler, a molluscan taxonomist. Dr. Bieler said that the shell was actually Architectonica gualitierii, a relatively newly described species that he had introduced in 1993.

He said that the species is not uncommon, it's just that no one had gotten around to doing a study of it and its relatives and publishing a paper proposing names for all of them until recently.
