A Georgia species! Common offshore to intertidal from North Carolina to Texas. The brown object you see in the mouth of the shell is called an operculum. This is a horny plate that is attached to the back of the animal's foot. The animal uses it to seal the mouth of the shell like a trap door when threatened by a predator.
